DESCRIPTION:Oxford Online Programme in Sleep Medicine\nMSc/PGDip Sleep Medicine\, University of Oxford – 2 year online programme \nStudy With Us \nSummary\nThe Online Programme in Sleep Medicine leads to a PGDip or MSc. It is hosted by the Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute (SCNi)\, in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences\, University of Oxford. The SCNi brings together world leading expertise in basic and human sleep and circadian research\, and in the evaluation and management of sleep disorders. \nThe student body\nThis post-graduate course has so far enrolled 181 students across 55 countries worldwide\, representing more than 24 disciplines and professions. Our course has attracted physicians and healthcare professionals\, including respiratory physicians\, neurologists\, psychiatrists\, paediatricians\, geriatricians\, GPs\, specialists who are focused on ‘behavioural sleep medicine’ (e.g. clinical psychologists\, neuropsychologists)\, clinical neurophysiologists as well as applied sleep scientists\, sleep technologists\, and nurses. We have also enrolled students who are relatively early in their careers\, recently graduating from undergraduate education. \nStudents interact with each other during the weekly online discussion groups\, led and moderated by core teaching staff. Additionally\, the role includes mentoring and assessing Level 4 and Level 6 respiratory apprentices. \nFlexible working patterns are available\, including a hybrid model of remote and on-site working. DESCRIPTION:National Physiological Science Data Collections \nOur national Gastrointestinal (GI) Physiology and Urodynamics data collections are open until Friday 4th July.  To date\, 46% of GI  and 26% of Urodynamic services have completed or made a start. We encourage all services to participate. \n  \nDuring May and June 2025\, we have hosted a number of webinars to share analysis from the Cardiac Science\, Respiratory and Sleep\, Vascular Sciences and Neurophysiology data collections.  A webinar to share the key messages from the audiology stocktake is scheduled for September 2025. \nOur physiological science dashboard can be accessed from here. If you would like to request access to view our dashboard\, please complete this form – Dashboard access form (please allow up to 10 days for the team to grant access). \nOur physiological science reporting dashboard now includes data collected from the adult and paediatric audiology collections. \nThe Ophthalmic Diagnostics and Imaging national collection will be open from Monday 15th September to Friday 10th October 2025.  Work is currently in progress to identify contacts who will be submitting data on behalf of NHS trusts.  We’ll be hosting a webinar on the 27th August to provide a technical walkthrough of the data collection and share more information about the data that is being requested. \n  \nPlease refer to our FutureNHS Collaboration Platform for information\, webinar recordings and updates relating to our national data collection  – https://future.nhs.uk/PhysiologicalMeasurements/groupHome \n  \nCapital Funding \nIn April 2025\, ICB’s submitted outline capital investment proposals for diagnostic services\, against the national capital allocation to support the return to achieving NHS constitutional standards. Approximately £29 million of capital investment for Physiological Science services has been indicatively approved – with business cases now being developed for this investment to be allocated to provider organisations. Trusts are encouraged not to delay submitting their business cases for physiological science equipment and facilities schemes\, so that funding can be released and equipment purchased. \n  \n  \n  \nPaediatric Audiology Services \nRecent national communication to ICB’s asks them to submit updated trajectories on the recall and reassessment of those patients identified as requiring a follow-up assessment. The letter also asks ICB’s and provider organisations to support mutual aid between providers in a system or Network. \nNational Audiology Improvement Collaborative \nExpressions of interest are now open for the second Audiology Improvement Collaborative\, which will commence in September 2025. Up to eight providers will be supported by NHS Elect to use a range of improvement methodology and local data to identify\, develop and test improvements within their service. The expression of interests will close on the 28th July 2025. \nListen to the recording of the webinar here. Expressions of interest can be submitted using this form. \nNHS Elect are hosting a shared learning webinar on the 8th July which will include learning from the providers who participated in the first Audiology Improvement Collaborative. Register here: \n  \nPhysiological Science Networks \nWe participated in a diagnostic workshop looking at how diagnostic networks including Physiological Science Services can become sustainable in the future. There is still lots to do to show the benefits of integrating physiological science services within Networks. Whilst PS networks are in their infancy compared to Imaging and Pathology networks\, there is a need to ensure the work of networks is operationally value adding and short-term opportunities to deliver savings from integration (e.g. through better procurement) are realised. \n  \nSite Visits \nThe team have been involved in providing advice and support to the Kings College Hospital Echocardiography service and will be involved in visits to the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Echo service and the Chesterfield Hospitals Audiology service over the coming weeks.\n  \nIQIPS Webinars\nThank you to all the presenters who presented in our IQIPS webinars. Experience in long term ventilation\, non-invasive ventilation and/or sleep analysis is essential\nThe successful candidates will work as part of the established MDT at a time of exciting change. Due to the rapid growth of our patient cohort\, we are currently re-structuring and developing the LTV service into two streams; Sleep Disordered Breathing NIV and Long-Term Complex Ventilation.\nThe band 6 posts will involve working autonomously with children and families on the ward\, in clinics and in the community. DESCRIPTION:Competition Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide) \nManchester Metropolitan University and University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust are sponsoring a PhD studentship\, to develop methodology to measure Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers in the plasma of obstructive sleep apnoea patients. \nAlzheimer’s disease (AD) is pathologically defined by the abnormal accumulation of extracellular proteins/peptides such as amyloid beta (Aβ) and tau in the brain\, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood. Recent methodological advances have enabled the development and validation of plasma biomarkers that are expected to simplify AD diagnosis. The quality and quantity of sleep\, which is significantly disrupted in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) patients\, has been associated with changes in blood AD biomarker levels in cross-sectional studies. Furthermore\, pathological levels of AD biomarkers have been described in CSF of OSA patients\, suggesting that sleep apnoea is a potential risk factor for AD. \nClick Here For More Information

DESCRIPTION:Can you support our PGCert Sleep Medicine students at UWE Bristol with short placements to aid completion of their workplace portfolios. \n  \nThe PGCert Sleep Medicine is a fast-track programme\, commissioned and fully funded by NHS England\, aimed directly at individuals currently working in NHS healthcare roles who are looking to upskill into sleep to help address the skills gaps evident within the NHS. \n  \nWe know that service pressures and staffing are an ongoing issue for many services\, and you may not feel you can accommodate a placement student at this time. However\, our students don’t need to work in a service for long periods\, they just need short but meaningful learning experiences and clinical exposure (e.g. shadowing\, sitting in on clinics\, professional discussions – either in person or online)\, though hands-on experience is always appreciated. And these students will soon be highly trained sleep professionals who can help to address the workforce gaps in your services going forward. \n  \nWe currently have 32 students on course who are actively completing their portfolio at present\, and will be confirming our October 2025 intake (maximum 50 students) very soon\, and so it would be good to share up-to-date placement information with them. \n  \nI hope you will be able to support our students in the coming year.
