Dr Hong-Viet V. Ngo-Dehning

Hong-Viet Ngo-Dehning (or Hongi) is a Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of Essex. Despite studying Physics at the University of Kiel, Dr Ngo-Dehning got captured by the field of Cognitive Neuroscience, in which he completed a PhD at the Universities of Lübeck in Germany. Afterwards, he gathered research experience at various institutions such as the School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham, the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour in the Netherlands and back at this at his alma mater the University of Lübeck.

His research examines the causal role of brain rhythms on cognition with a main focus on the consolidation of memories during sleep. To this end, Dr Ngo-Dehning combines behavioural paradigms with different non-invasive brain stimulation techniques in real-time experiments and, of late, multivariate decoding techniques. As a stimulation aficionado, he is always on the lookout for new technical advances to nudge the brain and ameliorate the function of sleep in disorders or other clinical settings.
